Group 1 with an early morning working kitchen fire

         Story by DC Brian Mandak

Hazleton city fire department was dispatched by Luzerne County 911 at around 3:30 am in the morning of January 28, 2011 to a reported structure fire at 620 N. Vine Street in the North side.  Eng. 2 is located a block away from that address and was there in seconds.

Crews were met by occupants that were barely dressed standing on the sidewalk. A smell of wood smoke was in the air and smoke in the home was approaching the floor level. Crews entered to check on the fire and found a stove fire with flames now burning into the kitchen cabinets. The pot of oil was spilled on the floor by the home owner and was also burning. A second tone was sent for a working kitchen fire and Engine 3 was placed in service to the scene.

Crews quickly knocked the fire down and opened the wall to check for extension. The family was checked by APTS Medic 11 and the father who had signs of smoke inhalation refused treatment and transport.  After an investigation by HFD it was found that the occupant fell asleep while cooking and after being woke up by the smoke alarms, he tried to extinguish the fire himself and in turn made it bigger by spreading it around. The fire was ruled an accident due to careless cooking. All occupants were aloud to return back to the home. Crews were back in service by 4:20 am.
