Training schedule 2012
All classes are held at the South Side Fire Station 525 E. Broad St. All Tuesday night classes will be held at the Diamond Station. All taskforce1 classes have a charge and you must pre register on line @ http://www.taskforce1.net/enrollment.html. Any certification testing will also have a charge set by the ETA that will be charged to non Hazleton City Fire Department members. All other classes please pre register with your company and send a rooster e-mail to hfdfirechiefs@hotmail.com at least 48 hours before the start of class. Any questions please contact the fire chief’s office at 570-455-6232. HFD company drill days or nights will be announced at your company meetings the week before

Rope / High Angle Rescue I (RORE) Prerequisites: 18 years of age, IST
Wed. 2/29/12, Wed. 3/7/12, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm and Saturday 3-10-12. 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Students in this course will be introduced to the various types of rope and related rescue equipment. Students will be training in tying of basic knots and hitches used in rope rescue, basic rappelling techniques, tie-offs, self-rescue, basic litter tie-ins, and basic litter handling skills. Much of the program is hands-on and time is allotted for practice in order to build proficiency.
**Students will need the following equipment: helmet with chin strap (fire, construction or climbing helmet), eye protection (such as safety glasses, HELMET FACE SHIELDS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE), clean leather gloves, work or hiking boots which provide support (NO SNEAKERS), outdoor work clothing appropriate for weather conditions and water bottle or other suitable device for storing liquids in the field. Students may bring additional personal or department owned equipment, but all such equipment will be subject to inspection prior to use. FIREFIGHTER TURN-OUT GEAR IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR THIS CLASS**

Rope / High Angle Rescue II (RORA) 18 years of age, RORE
Wed. 3-21-12 and Tues. 3-27-12, 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Sunday 3-25-12, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Students in this course will be re-introduced to the various types of rescue equipment. Students will be trained in mechanical advantage systems, safeties, basic ascending, basic rappelling technique and tie-offs with a rappel rack, rope changes, and one person rescue. The student will perform a low angle raise and lower evolution simulating patient transport on embankments. Most of the program is hands-on and time is allotted for practice in order to build proficiency.
Fire Department Risk Management
March 31, 2012 8:00 am until 4:30 pm.
Fred Bales wil be presenting the Fire Department risk management course at the South Side Station on March 31, 2012 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. This course is designed to not only look at the fire ground but handle risk management at a company level and and around the stations, gyms, company grounds. This program is designed noy only for the fire officer but also the firefighters, to provide an overview of the risk management process, with a focus on developing controls that meet the need of an individual department.

Rope / High Angle Rescue III Prerequisites: RORA

Saturday 4-21-12, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Students in this course will be re-introduced to the basics of RORE and RORA. Students will be trained in critical angles, advanced vertical rigging, picketing, load distributing anchor systems, tie-backs, artificial anchors, rigging stokes for vertical lifts, passing a knot in a raising/lowering system, and tying a patient into stokes while hanging on a vertical wall. Most of the program is hands-on and time is allotted for practice in order to build proficiency.

Sunday 5/6/12 Fire Police Misconceptions 8:00 am to 12:00 noon
This program introduces the student to Title 35 and the latest revision to the law, Act 122 of 1980. Fire Police law, PA Department of Transportation Vehicle Code Regulations Title 67, Vehicle Code Title 75, and the Penal Code Title 18 are used as references to illustrate the reality over the myths. The course is designed to eliminate the confusion and misunderstanding regarding the role, responsibility, authorization, and general information associated with fire police while engaged in their duties.

This program addresses the several safety and logistical issues commonly associated with emergencies occurring on major highways. The course will cover topics such as: hazard analysis, work zone security, safe work practices, environmental awareness, and command and control techniques for high-risk work areas. This course examines a real life incident, as well as, the lessons learned

This course is presented in a combination of classroom and filed work to present basic search operation techniques and organizational skills to the first responding units on a lost person incident.
Sat. & Sun. 9/22/12 & 9/23/12 Hazardous Materials Defensive Practices 8:30 to 5:00
These skills will serve as a prep class for Haz Mat 472 ops refresher to follow
This course is designed to improve safety and effectiveness of response actions to hazardous materials emergencies. Topics covered includes: basic knowledge of planning, incident response management processes, identifying level of protective clothing necessary, defensive strategies and tactics, and hands-on drills using many items commonly available or easily accessible to fire personnel during emergency operations

TBA Volunteer Retention & Recruitment problems & solutions
This course's targeted audience is administrative and line officers of volunteer fire departments, persons serving as recruitment officers or on recruitment/retention committees. Person’s serving in similar capacities in other volunteer emergency service organizations may benefit from attending. The course examines the results of a March 1993 conference at the National Fire Academy between 16 volunteer fire service representatives from around the country concerning retention and recruitment issues. Students will have the opportunity to examine these results and their implications, to share experiences, and to begin the process of applying the course content to conditions in their own departments.

This program is designed for the new Fire Officer, to provide an overview of the risk management process, with a focus on developing controls that meet the need of the individual department.
Fire Photography II FSC 594
22 Hours Lecture-12.0hrs / Lab-10.0hrs Gear: Helmet, work boots and clothing.
Prerequisites: Fire Photography I
Students in the course will be challenged to photograph different types of emergency services scenarios, both operational and administrative. The emphasis will be on composition and technical issues, including night scene photography, portraiture, public relations and fire prevention events, and investigative photography. Successful completion of the course will require each student to construct and display a presentation or portfolio of work supporting the fire service.* Student will need Camera with flash (35mm or digital), film or memory card (5 rolls of film)
