HAZLETON CITY FIRE OPEN HOUSE

The Hazleton Fire Department will once again be holding our annual fire prevention open house in the hopes of educating and promoting fire safety to the public in which we serve. This event is done during national fire prevention week which runs October 3rd thru 9th, in conjunction with our school visits and adult programs. This year’s theme is Beep! Beep! Beep! Smoke alarms a sound you should know.

The event will be held on the evening of Wednesday October 6, 2010, at the South Side Station 525 E. Broad St. Hazleton. The times of the event will be from 6:00 pm until 09:00 pm. The public is invited to attend children must be accompanied by an adult.

2010 FIRE PREVENTION VISITS STARTED EARLY AGAIN THIS YEAR

2009 was a great and busy year for fire prevention. This year we started early again with our department visits. Crews used the fire safety trailer at Head Start on May 7, 2010 where crew’s taught fire safety to a total of 115 preschool aged children. Already this year, in addition to the Head Start group the department has scene over 122 adults and 25 children with some form of a fire safety or extinguisher program.

MVA CAR HITS TREE CHURCH & TAMARACK ST

City fire crews were dispatched to a reported tree on top of a car at the location of three bocks from city hall, unknown injuries and or if people are in the car. Eng. 2 Eng. 3 Chief 3 responded. Eng. 2 arrived to find a large tree on top of the car and no one inside. A woman was sitting on the steps of a house across the street. She was driving and refused treatment, she stated the passenger had run from the scene. The woman was taken into custody with HPD. Crew’s assisted Highway and Police until the second unstable tree was cut down to the street level.

SOUTHSIDE FIRE DISPLACES THREE

Hazleton fire crews were sent to a Southside duplex for a structure fire. Upon arrival of crews found smoke coming from 3rd floor windows. First crews entered with TIC and a can to search for the fire. Crews knocked down a fire on the third floor. Crews vented and removed a mattress from the 3rd floor. Crews were assisted by APTS ambulance, which transported a patient to Hazleton General Hospital. No firefighters were injured.

CITY FIRE CREWS RESCUE PETS FROM NOTHSIDE FIRE

City fire crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire on West Diamond Ave.  A city DC arrived confirming a fire on the first floors. Crews were advised of several pets trapped in the structure. Crews made quick work of the fire and rescued all the pets. Crews used pet masked that were donated by a resident of the city. No injuries were reported.  Five persons were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

HAZLETON CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES FEMA GRANT FOR LADDER TRUCK

City Fire Chief Donald Leshko announced Friday that the fire department has been awarded a federal grant in the amount of $666,000 for the purchase of a new ladder truck. The new ladder will replace the fire department's 38-year-old 1972 ladder truck.

FIREFIGHTERS HELP DONTATE TOMBSTONE TO FAMILY OF BOYS KILLED IN FIRE

On Monday, the third anniversary of the fire that killed Omar and Elijah Sanes, the boy’s family joined Hazleton firefighters in dedicating the tombstone, which rests near a driveway on the grassy southern end of St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Hazleton Heights. 
City fire crews learned that the family didn’t have the money to pay for a headstone.  Firefighters of the department solicited funds to help purchase the tombstone with the family.

CITY FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO BUILDING FIRE ON NORTHSIDE
City fire crews responded to a reported house fire on 1st street in the city. First arriving fight fighters to find flames coming from the entire front pouch windows. Firefighters went to work protecting exposes and making an attack.  No injuries were reported. The cities chief’s office requested assistance from the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshals’ office to determine the origin and cause.

HAZLETON FIREFIGHTERS KEPT BUSY WITH 2ND WORKING FIRE IN A WEEK

The Hazleton Fire Department was dispatched on March 14, 2010 at 15:41hrs for a reported structure at 874 Emerald Court.  Upon arrival crews found heavy fire showing from the 3rd Floor of the residence.   Crews where met by all occupants outside of the home, and crews immediately began fire attack on the 3rd floor and also conducted a search to make sure all occupants where out of the house, which the search proved negative.  Fire was contained to the 3rd floor of the residence which sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage.  The other two remaining floors suffered smoke and water damage.   The occupants of the residence (total of 5) are being assisted by the American Red Cross at this time.  At this time the fire remains under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal and the Hazleton Fire Department.

PPL Electric and UGI Gas responded to the scene and controlled utilities to the residence
No Firefighters or residents where injured during the blaze.   Firefighters from all five city fire companies responded. APTS EMS where on scene and provided rehab and ems coverage to the firefighters on scene.

FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO REPORTED STRUCTURE FIRE ON NORTHSIDE

 On Thursday March 11, 2009 at 17:25 hrs. The Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 129 W. Diamond Ave. reported to be in the second floor apt. As crews went responding county reported they were receiving numerous calls. Engine 2 and Chief 3 arrived and reported smoke showing fro division 2, Chief 3 assumed command. The structure was a 60 by 75 two story apartment building with four occupied apartments.  Eng. 3 was dispatched for RIT assignment along with a tone for additional manpower. 
 Initial reports were everyone was out and the fire was in the second floor kitchen on the D side. Eng. 4 arrived and established a water supply to the hydrant at Church & Diamond Ave. Eng. 2 stretched a 1 ¾ to the second floor and prepared to attack the fire. The ladder crew was told of the possibility of one occupant still inside and the crews went in to search and clear the building. Ladder 1 crew confirmed that everyone was outside and the search was negative.  At this time the kitchen window had failed and fire was visible from the D side second floor window.  A second 1 ¾ back up line was stretched and placed into service. Outside vent crews laddered the building with ground ladders and vented the windows adjacent the fire room. Crews extinguished the fire and the call was placed into under control status at 17:40 hrs.  Crews remained on scene to assist with salvage and overhaul and the investigation. Everyone was available and back in service by 19:45 hrs.
 Four people were displaced and assisted by the American Red Cross and the landlord. Medic 11 established Rehab and treated one home occupant for hypertension for the excitement. The Hazleton City Fire Department conducted the investigation and quantified the hypostasis that indeed it was a cooking fire. The fire was deemed accidental caused by careless cooking with oil on the stove.
Members from all five city companies responded. Hazleton fire police shut down a block of Diamond Ave during the fire operations.

City fire crews respond to a working vehicle fire at 1624 hrs on 02/10/2010. Crews arrived to find a sedan with fire in the engine compartment extending into the passenger compartment.

During 2009, members and the city fire chief's office conducted station tours, school visits, housing apartments, smoke alarm installations and employee training.
People seen totaling 3998 are broken down as follows:

NORTHEAST DUPLEX SENDS FAMILY INTO COLD

November 8, 2009
City fire department was dispatched at 01:30hrs for a reported structure fire at 3 Morris Lane. Upon arrival crews found heavy fire showing from the first floor front window area extending into the porch area. Crews immediately started fire attack along with conducting primary and secondary searches.  The searches found to be negative and it was found that 3 Morris Lane was vacant and 4 Morris Lane was occupied by two adults and one child, all got out safely and were unharmed. Fire was contained and brought under control in approx 45 minutes and crews remained on scene till 7:00am conducting overhaul and investigating the cause of the fire. At this time the fire remains as undetermined and a joint investigation continues by the Hazleton Fire Department and Hazleton Police Department Detectives Division.

CREWS ARRIVE TO FIND GARAGE FULLY INVOLVED

The Hazleton Fire Department was dispatched on October 7, 2009 at 05:30hrs for a reported structure at 588 N. Carson Street.  Upon arrival crews found the fire was located to the rear of 588 Carson Street on Garibaldi Court.  The structure was a single story two stall garage which was fully involved with heavy fire showing from the roof area.  Crews immediately went to a defensive attack and exposure protection.   Fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes and remained on scene until about 10:00am conducting overhaul and investigation.  
The fire remains as undetermined and a joint investigation continues by the Hazleton Fire Department, Hazleton Police Department and Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal.
The garage was used for household storage.
No Firefighters or residents were injured during the blaze.   Firefighters from all five city fire companies responded along with the Hazleton City Fire Police,   Hazleton Police Department and APTS who provided rehab to firefighters on scene.

NORTHSIDE DUPLEX FIRE DISPLACES 5
September 24, 2009
At 1834 hrs city fire was dispatched for a structure fire at 735 McNair St. While enroute an off duty firefighter called in a reported heavy fire shown from the rear of the home.  Engine 2 arrived on scene to find heavy fire venting from a rear window. Crews deployed a 3” blitz fire to darken down the fire. A 1 ¾ attack line was deployed into a front door to finish extinguishment.  Pipeline 4 arrived and laid a 4” supply line to engine 2. Ladder one took position on the A B corner and started venting side B. A cooking accident was determined to be the cause.

CREWS RESPOND TO HEIGHTS BASEMENT FIRE
September 13, 2009
City fire crews were dispatched to a building filled with smoke in the City’s Heights section. Crews arrived to find a single family dwelling charged with smoke. Firefighters searched the building with a TIC and found a small fire in the basement.  Crews used a PW to extinguish the blaze. There were no injuries reported from scene. Fire crews were assisted by APTS ambulance and Hazleton City Police.

HAZLETON FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST BILLY G SAFETY SEMINAR

On October 22, 2009 at 6:00pm, the Hazleton City Fire Department and West Hazleton Fire Department will be hosting ” The Billy G Safety Seminar”. Anyone interested in attending needs to fill out an State Fire Academy Resident Application using course code BSS, Hazleton 2009.

The course will be held at the Cinema Draft House, 31 W Broad St., West Hazleton.  The draft house has a full bar and dinner menu.  All food and beverage orders will be at the expense of the individuals ordering and are not included with the program.

FIREFIGHTERS SAVE TWO IN DOWNTOWN ARSON BLAZE
July 1, 2009
The city fire department was dispatched to a structure fire with entrapment at Broad & Laurel Streets by Luzerne County 911. Upon arrival of Engine 4, he reported smoke showing and occupants stating the fire was in the rear. Eng. 4 then proceeded to the rear of the building. Two occupants had jumped from the second floor window and were lying on the sidewalk. Chief 3, Ladder 1 and Engine 2 took positions on the Broad Street side. Chief 3 assumed command and requested a second alarm. Second alarm brings Engines 3 and 5 and Ladder 2. Occupants then stated that there indeed was someone else trapped upstairs and they were not sure of how many people were upstairs, they said it could be as many as ten.
Engines 4 were still trying to make access to the rear of the building. Crew members walked up the alley behind the fences, were met by C-3 and told to go up on a primary search.
Crews entered with primary attach lines. Ladder 1 was sent to the roof for ventilation, while ground ladders were being placed to front windows to be removed for ventilation.
The 2 occupants that heard the smoke alarms exited by the front stairwell on their own, one man was rescued by a ladder in the rear of the building off of a neighboring roof, two victims jumped from a second story window, and one female was rescued by firefighters.

QUICK WORK BY FIREFIGHTERS KEEP DAMAGE MINIMAL
MAY 25, 2009
An early morning fire Monday damaged an unoccupied home on north side. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the building, crews forced the front door and entered to find a fire in the basement. City Fire Chief Donald Leshko stated that he believes the working smoke detection system contributed to the damaged being minimal. The fire is being listed as unintentional.

MIDTOWN FIRE SENTS TENETS INTO COLD
January 25, 2009

City dispatched to a structure fire in midtown. While crews were responding, LCCC reported a fire with an electric heater on the third floor. Deputy Mandak arrived and reported nothing showing, but occupants outside on the sidewalk.  Engine 2 & Ladder 1 arrived crews were sent to floor to investigate. Crews found a smoldering chair and clothing in a bedroom with thick smoke throughout the apartment. Crews vented the apartment and used a TIC to check for extension. An investigation into the origin and cause was conducted by Hazleton City Fire determined that a space heater, TV and VCR were plugged into several zip cords. The cause is being listed accidental. The All units were released and returned to service.

CITY CREWS RESPOND TO SCHOOL BUS CRASH
January 15, 2009
Crews were summoned to a bus crash on the north side of the city. Upon arrival of DC Jones, he advised that their were no children on the bus. One vehicle had substantial damage to the front end. One Patient was transported by APTS BLS.

DOWNTOWN FIRE RULED ARSON
December 30, 2008

City fire crews were dispatched to 19 W Broad St., for a reported structure fire. Engine 4 arrived and reported a working fire second floor.  Crews tried to gain access to the second floor, but were hampered due to the floor being burned out in places. So crews used a out of service sprinkler system to contain and help extinguish the fire. Ladder one positioned in front of building opened the 2nd floor and roof. Fire crews did a great job with containing the fire to one building. Adjoining buildings sustained some water and smoke damage. The fire department was assisted by Hazleton City Police and the PSP fire marshals office.

HAZLETON POLICE ON PATROL FIND TELEPHONE POLE SHEARED IN HALF
December 6 2008

At 2:22 AM HFD and Medic 11 were dispatched for a car into a pole on East Broad Street in the area of Deganhart Chiropractic , C-2, Engine 4 responded to find 1 vehicle off the roadway with severe front end damage. A pole was sheared in half and there were low wires hanging across E. Broad St. (Rt. 93 Hwy.) 1 pt. was lying on the ground next to the car with the 2nd pt. sitting next to him. Both had severe head trauma and aero medical X 2 was req. to fly. Engine 2 responded to set up a secondary landing zone by the Highway Dept. The road way was closed until 0600 till P.P. & L. secured all wires and removed the old pole.

SOUTHSIDE FIRE SUSPICIOUS
November 30, 2008

Hazleton City Fire and Medic 11 dispatched to 514 E Cranberry Ave. for a reported structure fire.  Engine 4 and Ladder 1 arrived to find a 2 1/2 story duplex with smoke showing from 1st and 2nd division of the 512 section side A.  Additional reports of possible entrapment but quick questioning of the home owner said everyone was evacuated.  Working fire tone was set off as well as placing E-3 in service.  Ladder 1 crew with C-2 started attack with 1 ¾ line and was faced with large amount of thick black smoke from the front door to throughout the entire structure.  Fire was quickly found in the middle room of the 1st division on the couch. It was extinguished and ventilation was started to clear the house from the smoke and heat.   Another small amount of fire was found in the basement.  Primary and secondary searches were found negative and thermal camera was used to find any extension, which came up negative.  514 side of the structure sustained just smoke damage and the 512 side sustained severe damage to the 1st division and smoke damage to the 2nd division.  Chief Leshko and HPD fire marshal are investigating.
